“Where Evil Grows”: Chords and Lyrics

220px-Thins-behind-the-sun-dvd-coverSerendipity often does this to me–it leads me to discover new songs. I was watching a movie, Behind the Sun,  starring Kim Dickens (you’ve seen her on Treme) and she portrayed a singer who sang this song: “Where Evil Grows.” (The voice was actually that of Kristen Vigard) I did find a video here of the Poppys performing the song, but couldn’t find Vigard’s version anywhere).

“Where Evil Grows”: Performed by Susan & Terry Jacks, the Poppy Family

Verse One

Gm                  Cm        Gm
I like the way you smile at me
Gm               Cm               Gm
I felt the heat that enveloped me
Gm           Bb                Cm
And what I saw I liked to see
Gm
I never knew where evil grew

Verse 2:
Gm               Cm               Gm
I should have steered away from you
Gm                       Cm                        Gm
My friend told me to keep clear of you
Gm            Bb                    Cm
But something drew me near to you
Gm
I never knew where evil grew

Chorus:
Bb                Gm
Evil grows in the dark
Cm                                Gm
Where the sun it never shines
Cm   F             Cm    F
Evil grows in cracks and holes
Eb                     Gm
And lives in people’s minds

Bb                       Gm
Evil grew, it’s part of you
Cm                    D
And now it seems to be
Cm     F    Cm        Gm
That every time I look at you
Eb               Gm
Evil grows in me

Chords of Bridge: Gm     Bb    F   Gm    Bb    F

Verse 3:
If I could build a wall around you
I could control the thing that you do
But I couldn’t kill the will within you
And it never shows
The place where evil grows

Chorus:
Evil grows in the dark
Where the sun it never shines
Evil grows in cracks and holes
And lives in people’s minds

Evil grew, it’s part of you
And now it seems to be
That every time I look at you
Evil grows in me
