At the 2013 Harlingen Book Festival, Saturday, May 11, the Rio Grande Valley is remembering and honoring its early Scottish and Irish settlers such as John Young and John McAllen by adding a legendary bagpiper to its program–Lary Fowler. Lary has been performing full-time as a piper in the Soutwest for the past decade. His various attires include anything from renaissance period clothing to full British military. As recently as September of 2012 he has entered three competitions in Louisiana, Mississippi and Oklahoma winning 9 medals. He is a competition level performance bagpiper. He has played corporate events such as the Scentsy Corporation annual meeting of 10000 in Fort Worth, Texas and OSG of Dallas, Texas. Weddings, funerals, memorials, veterans events, surprise birthday parties, both private and corporate, are functions for which he has performed. He also piped for a film project for a large nationwide corporate organization.
The festival is free. Lary is only one of many treats in store on this day devoted to promoting literacy and the arts. Contact the Harlingen Public Library for more information. 410 ’76 Drive Harlingen, Texas 78550 Phone: 956-216-5801 or 956-216-5821.
